My Anti-nausea Ginger Tea recipe was a lifesaver when I started taking Methotrexate, an immunosuppressant for my rheumatoid arthritis. It is full of fresh ginger, anti-inflammatory turmeric, and lemon.
Methotrexate and nausea
Medication is typically prescribed after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Tackling the disease in the early stages can alter the progression of the disease and help prevent deformities and permanent joint damage, and reduce pain and inflammation. For many, the decision to start medication is a difficult one. Even though science has changed drastically for RA drugs, and the available ones are considered great advances in science, they come with some hefty side effects.
One of the most common side effects experienced while taking Methotrexate is nausea. I experienced this for the first six weeks of taking it. I would take my weekly dose of medication on a Sunday evening, and by Monday morning, waves of nausea would roll over me for the next two days. While I have a fairly high tolerance for discomfort and pain, nausea is one symptom I struggle with. I was prescribed Zofran, an antiemetic drug, to help with nausea but preferred to go an all-natural route.
I made an anti-nausea ginger tea which I kept on the stovetop at a low simmer throughout the day. This allowed me to refill my cup whenever I needed it. The tea contains ginger which helps fight nausea, fresh turmeric, which has anti-inflammatory effects, and lemon, also to help with nausea. Sipping on this homemade tea elevated my abdominal discomfort and allowed me to continue with my day and be present with my kids.
How to make this recipe
- The first step to making Anti-nausea Ginger Tea is to boil 8-16 ounces of water. You can boil more if you are like me and want to have a large pot of tea to sip on throughout the day.

What is ginger?
Ginger is grown mainly in Asia and tropical regions and is cultivated for its edible underground stem or rhizome. It is an ancient herb used widely in history for its medicinal properties, including being antiemetic. Ginger can help alleviate other disorders, including general abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, vomiting, dyspepsia, and headaches.
Health benefits of ginger tea
The main pharmacological compounds found in ginger are found in the oils of this herb. These oils, including gingerols and shogaols, give ginger its pharmacological activity. They act mainly within the gastrointestinal tract, helping increase gastric motility and gastric tone.
As mentioned above, fresh ginger contains gingerols. In addition to helping alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort, gingerols are a phytonutrient with an anti-inflammatory effect.
Help with headaches and migraines
The same compounds found in ginger to help alleviate nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort are also known to have pain-relieving effects.
Ginger tea variations
- Ginger-cinnamon tea. Add a small pinch of ground cinnamon or a cinnamon stick to the tea while steeping. Cinnamon is also a warming herb.
- Ginger-mint tea. Add a few fresh mint leaves while steeping. The cooling effect of the mint will balance out the warming effect of the ginger.
- Ginger-honey tea. Add a small amount of honey to the tea for a sweeter cup.
- Ginger-chamomile tea. Add a small teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers to the tea while steeping. Chamomile flowers have a calming effect.
Anti-nausea Ginger Tea
- a few slices of fresh ginger
- a few slices of fresh turmeric root
- squeeze of fresh lemon
- 8-16 oz boiling water
- Boil the water in a teea kettle or in a small saucepan. While the water is boiling, add a few slices of fresh ginger and fresh turmeric to a coffee cup.
- Next, slice some lemon and squeeze the juice over the ginger and turmeric. Pour the hot water over top and allow to steep for 5-10 minutes. Enjoy!
